Wine: Burgundy, $15 - 30
This is a great example of what good Beaujolais can be. All natural yeast, aged in 200 year-old casks, this also an example of what careful attention and taking the best of traditional practices can achieve. Half-way between Morgon and Brouilly, this has bright fruit, a complex nose of dried herbs, and just enough acidity to work with a wide variety of foods. Try it slightly chilled.
Just a young couple in 1990, Isabelle and Denis decided to take over 2 hectares of the family land to produce their own wine. It took a few years to get it down right, releasing the first vintage in 1994. Now, the estate has grown to 16 hectares with vineyards in 3 Chablis premier crus appellations. The estate is entirely organic and mostly hand harvested, which is rare in the region. This Chablis is dominated by white flowers and stone fruit on the nose and palate, with bright acidity and clean mineral character.
Daniel Rion is one of our favoirte Burgundy producers. The wines, now made by Daniel's children, are made with minimal intervention from fruit that is grown without chemical fertilizers or herbicides. The vines for this wine are distributed on several parcels located on the bottom of the hillside in Nuits Saint Georges. Gently sloping, on deep brown ground of silt and clays, with strong minerals and of 20 year old average age, they produce a structured, balanced wine that show red fruits like cherry now and will gain more earthy notes as it ages.
From 14 hectares of old vines (40-50 yrs) in organically grown vineyards, Francoise Juillot (daughter of Michel of Mercurey) produces this elegant, structured white. After deciding that she wanted to make wine and setting up her own venture, Françoise went into partnership in 1989 with Maurice Bertrand, a small grower in Montagny. In 2004 Françoise bought the other half of the business from the Bertrand family.
