The family-owned winery dates back to 1880 when a jealous neighbor set fire to the estate, hence the name – "bruciata" means "burned". Charismatic winemaker Francesco Baravalle stopped into the store to share his wonderful wines. This nebbiolo really won us over with its pretty nose of ripe red fruit, rose petals, and minty herbs. Medium and delicate in body, but well concentrated and bright in acid makes this a perfect match for food.
We love this stuff and so does everyone we recommend this to. Not only is it affordable Nebbiolo, it's complex too. This producer is nestled on the ridge of a hill in the town of Barbaresco. They make traditional style wines in small quantities. When the budget doesn't allow for Barolo or Barbaresco, try this. Muscular, dark and lean with hints of tar.
Tucked into the remote corner of the Savioe, in the village of Chignin, quietly grows the well tended vines of Adien Berlioz, at Cellier des Cray. The slopes are angled enough that nothing can be worked by machine. He cultivates local varietals of Jacqure and Mondeuse, as well as a local version of Roussannne. The soils are turned for a healthy bio-culture, using herbs to fertilize in lieu of inorganic products. He hand delivers fruit to the tiny cellar where natural practices encourage slow fermentations and even maturation.
Pierre Jequier and Blandine Chauchat make gorgeous wines at Mas Foulaquier in Pic St. Loup -- often described as the best terroir in the Languedoc. Their l'Orphee has deep, dark berry fruit, subtle floral notes with hints of herbs and an intriguing minerality. Medium-full bodied, it has great balance and depth of flavor. It has structure that will allow pairing with fuller dishes, but the wine is very accessible and enjoyable now. Mas Foulaquier is fully certified organic and biodynamic.
Produced by winemaker darling of the press, Jose Palacious, this is a beautiful expression of the Mencia grape from Bierzo, in the northwest corner of Spain. Made from 60-100 year old vines that have dug their way deep down into the slate-rich soils. Offers blueberry and violet fruit, backed with striking minerality.
Masciarelli is the largest organically farmed Estate in Italy. This everyday charmer is a nice marriage of old and new world styles. It has a bit of earthiness in an old world way, but plenty of fruit to please just about anyone! It has a slightly smoky and dusty nose with dark berries and leather. Cherries, blackberries and chocolate round out the palate. This is a great "house wine" to have around for meals and friends.
Winemaking Details: Stainless Steel Tank Fermentation.
Olivier Cousin is one of our favorite Loire vignerons, with a gentle disposition and salt n' pepper beard. Cousin's horse, Joker, plows the vineyards. His wines are the epitome of natural. Breton is the local moniker for Cabernet Franc. Funky and wild (in a good way) tastes like ripe plums, chalky mineral, earth and mushrooms. Winemaking Details: Wild Yeast Fermentation, Unfiltered, Unfined, Low SO2 Added, Vegan
Casina di Cornia is a small farmhouse resting on a rural twenty-four hectares in the rolling hills of Castellina Chianti (Siena), and was restored in 1979 by Antoine Luginbühl and his wife Francine Dufour. Farming organically and using a hands-off approach to winemaking allows them to make wines that are beautifully unadulterated. This Chianti Classico has a bouquet of berries, prunes and cinnamon. On the palate, it is fresh and ripe with balanced tannins and acidity, making it a great match with traditional Italian cuisine.
We're excited to get this beauty in the store! The vineyards are located on steep, black volcanic slopes of Mount Vulture in Northern Basilicata, where high altitudes produce wines with excellent structure and complexity. Dark purple in the glass, this wine is introduced with fresh cherry and strawberries on the nose before a rich palate of red fruit, white pepper, a hint of vanilla, and soft tannins. Winemaking Details: macerated for 15 days on the skins, aged for 1 year in second use barriques
Bright floral red fruit from beautiful Liguria. Light bodied, aromatic and like a vacation in a bottle. Delicate and soft with earth and mineral. A perfect summer red and seafood-friendly!
